Does acupuncture work?
It’s the first thing people always ask when they learn I’m an acupuncturist. They usually say something like, “Oh, how wonderful! I always wanted to try acupuncture. But does it really work?”
My reply often includes information from the National Institutes of Health website, which offers much reassurance. Like research showing that acupuncture effectively eliminates various types of pain for up to a year after treatment stops. Like the use of acupuncture among U.S. adults more than doubled between 2002 and 2022. Like acupuncture has been studied for at least 50 health issues beyond pain conditions, and it’s been found overall to be safe and effective.
But beyond statistics and studies, there’s this: If acupuncture didn’t work, it would have been abandoned thousands of years ago.
Instead, acupuncture is thriving. In fact, it’s the most widely used traditional medicine practiced around the world, as detailed in TIME.
